How to Help Those That Won't Ask for It

Nearly everyone goes through a rough patch in life when they require assistance from others. The problem arises when someone needs help but doesn't like asking for it. So, what do you do if you've watched someone struggle significantly and you aren't sure how to help them?

The Bible is filled with verses about helping those in need. Deuteronomy 15:11 says, "There will always be poor in the land. Therefore, I command you to be open-handed towards your fellow Israelites who are poor and needy in your land." Galatians 6:2 states, "Carry each other's burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ."

Helping others is the Godly thing to do and there are ways you can reach out to those who are afraid or too proud to seek assistance. Check out some things you can do for your family, friends or neighbors in your assisted living community.

Be a Good Listener

Some people are too proud to simply receive monetary help, and in times of trouble, they are likely to feel isolated and lonely. In cases like this, you can offer your support by listening, so it's important to make yourself available to listen to the person as they complain or vent about the issue. Call them up and ask how they are doing or invite them for brunch or tea at your assisted living community. Let the person know they can trust you so they can talk through what they're feeling.

Provide Resources

If you can, find out specifically what your friend or a family member needs and do a little research to find the correct resources. Search the internet for local resources or speak to a community church or organization. While the person might not want to accept physical or monetary help from you, they might be open to getting the necessary assistance from local resources.

Never Force the Issue

The desire to help someone is usually felt out of love and respect for that person. If you care for them, you don't want to see them suffer. Instead of pressuring the person or insisting they accept help from you, offer them help and back off. Forcing an issue may put more pressure on the individual and can make them feel more isolated and uncomfortable.

Seek Help

In cases of emergency when an individual still won't get help, it may be time for you to intervene. Speak with someone in your area, explain what's going on and find out what the person needs to do to get assistance.

Residents of Collinwood in Fort Collins, CO, have access to an array of resources, including medical care, art, music and pet therapy, and a 24-hour emergency call system. Whether you need help or think a neighbor does, there's always someone to call on.
